Energy and greenhouse gas emissions

Greenhouse gas management

In 2024, UFOC has complete the greenhouse gas inventory in accordance with ISO14064-1, and the total annual greenhouse gas emissions of the company in 2024 has 591.6389 tons of CO2e. Among them, category 1 direct emissions accounted for 17% of the total, mainly from gas and diesel official vehicles and manufacturing process emissions; Category 2 accounted for 83% of the total, mainly from the power consumption of equipment used in the factory process.
The overall carbon emission intensity of the company increase by 17% compared with the previous year. In the future, the plant will track the achievement of the short and medium term carbon reduction targets of the company through routine carbon inventory, so as to contribute to the global carbon reduction.

Note 1: Since 2022, the company has started to conduct Category 3 greenhouse gas inventory, emission factor reference, academic papers, similar products or Simarpro, Environmental Protection Department and other materials.
Note 2: The scope of Category 3 covers upstream and downstream transportation and distribution, employee commuting, disposal of solid and liquid waste, downstream leased assets, investments and other GHG emissions in the value chain.
Note 3: In 2023, the data calculation for Category 4 activities was incorrect. After recalculation, the emission amount has been updated to 2,612.6022 tons of CO2e.

Waste management system

The main waste of the company comes from the business waste generated by the manufacturing process of the plant, which is mainly the business waste generated by the manufacturing process of optical fiber cable, and contains a small amount of hazardous waste, which is mainly from the by-product produced by the optical fiber cable manufacturing process. The hazardous waste is stored in the designated safety cabinet in accordance with the regulations. Each output and monthly regular waste output and temporary storage declaration are recorded by a specially-assigned person, and the waste is dispatched to a third-party qualified cleaner of the Ministry of Environment for cleaning. In the Taipei office, only general household waste, waste plastics, metals and paper are classified according to the waste classification standards set by the building, and the management of the building commissions a third-party qualified cleaner to handle them.
In order to avoid the negative impact of the waste from its operations on the neighboring communities and the ecology, the company follows the Waste Control Procedure (QP-101) established by the Ministry of Environment, and carries out an annual vehicle audit on the hazardous waste scavengers by the factory unit, and tracks the transport path of the waste scavengers through GPS to ensure that the waste is properly disposed of.
In 2024, Lianguang Tong completed the on-site audit of two waste cleaner contractor, and no waste dumping and violations were found. In the future, the audit will continue to be conducted against the cleaner, in order to maintain the goal of zero waste violations.

Waste value chain management practices

Waste value chain management measures
Upstream of the value chain - raw materials Factory monthly statistics for incoming materials
Own operation - Office and factory waste Clearly label the temporary storage space of hazardous waste according to the waste management code, and collect quantitative data according to the existing situation.
Waste disposal down the value chain In the process of removal and treatment, the Internet and the declaration of the triple bill in accordance with the regulations, and the on-site audit of the hazardous waste disposal provider.

Waste generation

In 2024, the total amount of waste is 48.82 tons, The waste intensity also decrease by 4.25% compared to last year. Mainly due to the growth of orders resulting in the doubling of raw material shipments, packaging waste and process waste. In the future, we will continue to track the trend of various waste changes, and gradually improve the recycling rate of resources, in order to reduce the impact of our operations on the external environment.

Water resources management

Water resources risk assessment

With the intensification of extreme climate in recent years, the uneven distribution of global rainfall has become the norm, and the frequency and severity of rainstorm, drought and flood have exceeded the past record year by year, which not only affects the general livelihood of water, but also increases the supply chain instability of enterprises and the risk of plant operation interruption. Water resource risk management has become an issue that cannot be ignored in enterprise operation.
In order to assess whether there is Water Risk in each operation base of Lianguangtong, we adopted the online tool Aqueduct Water Risk Atlas of the World Resources Institute to analyze the water intake pressure of each base in 2024, and the identification results showed that all the bases of Lianguangtong were not located in areas with high water pressure. In the future, we will continue to track and evaluate the water resources pressure of each site year by year to avoid the potential impact of common water on local residents and ecology.

The destination of water intake and discharge at each point

Operation location Water source Watershed Drainage treatment level Final destination  Water pressure
Hsinchu Head office Third-party water Baoshan reservoir Sewage treatment plant pipeline Hsinchu Sewage treatment plant Middle-Low (10-20%)
Taipei office Third-party water Feitsui reservoir Sewage treatment plant pipeline Neihu Sewage treatment plant Middle-Low (10-20%)

Wastewater discharge management

In the part of wastewater discharge, in order to avoid the impact of process water on the local ecology, the Hsinchu plant is uniformly commissioned by the Grade A wastewater treatment plant of Zhuke, main wastewater: air conditioning water accounts for about 85%, domestic water accounts for about 7.5%, and process water accounts for about 7.5%, which is confirmed to meet the local wastewater discharge requirements and discharged into the Douqian River. The Taipei office only has domestic waste water, which does not need to be tested, and is discharged into the Keelung River after unified management and treatment by the sewage pipe of the building into the lake sewage treatment plant in its jurisdiction. Only the Hsinchu operation base is commissioned by the Ministry of Environment to provide qualified third-party units to conduct water quality testing every year, and discharge according to local sewer water quality standards. In 2024, the wastewater testing values of the whole plant of Lianguangtong meet the requirements of local laws and regulations, and there is no violation of local sewage discharge regulations.
